Bright Stars and Metallicity Spread in the Globular Cluster

چکیده
The globular cluster Ω Centauri (NGC 5139) is the most massive and brightest cluster in our Galaxy. It has also a moderately high mass to light ratio (3.6) and an anomalous flattening (0.83) for a globular cluster. This cluster is also very interesting because it is one of a few examples of globular clusters with a measurable spread in the metal abundance (see Da Costa & Willumsen 1981, Norris et al. 1996, and Suntzeff and Kraft 1996 and references therein) and then it offers a unique, big sample of nearby stars having all the same distance and reddening but showing different metallicity (and age ?) effects. A recent paper by Norris et al. (1997) shows also an interesting correlation between kinematics and metal abundance.

The Dependence of the Soft X-ray Properties of Lmxbs on the Metallicity of Their Environment
We determine the X-ray spectral properties of a sample of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) which reside in globular clusters of M31, as well as five LMXBs in Galactic globular clusters and in the Large Magellanic Cloud using the ROSAT PSPC. We find a trend in the X-ray properties of the LMXBs as a function of globular cluster metallicity. The spectra of LMXBs become progressively softer as the m...
متن کاملDeep Mixing and Metallicity: Carbon Depletion in Globular Cluster Giants
We present the results of an observational study of the efficiency of deep mixing in globular cluster red giants as a function of stellar metallicity. We determine [C/Fe] abundances based on low-resolution spectra taken with the Kast spectrograph on the 3m Shane telescope at Lick Observatory. Spectra centered on the 4300Å CH absorption band were taken for 42 bright red giants in 11 Galactic glo...
متن کاملSe p 19 99 Chemical Abundances of Bright Giants in the Mildly Metal - Poor Globular Cluster
We present a chemical composition analysis of three dozen giant stars in the nearby “CN-bimodal” mildly metal-poor (<[Fe/H]> = -1.18) globular cluster M4. The analysis combined traditional spectroscopic abundance methods with modifications to the line-depth ratio technique pioneered by Gray (1994). Silicon and aluminum are found to be primordially overabundant by factors exceeding the mild over...
متن کاملLow Mass X-ray Binaries in Globular Clusters: a New Metallicity Effect
Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs) containing bright X-ray sources (Lx > 10 erg/s), commonly associated with Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), are found to be significantly denser and more metal-rich than normal non-X-ray clusters both in the Galaxy and in M31. Within a framework where LMXBs in GCs are generated via tidal captures in highdensity clusters and (2 + 1) encounters in low-density globu...
متن کاملExplaining the color distributions of globular cluster systems in elliptical galaxies.
The colors of globular clusters in most large elliptical galaxies are bimodal. This is generally taken as evidence for the presence of two cluster subpopulations that have different geneses. However, here we find that, because of the nonlinear nature of the metallicity-to-color transformation, a coeval group of old clusters with a unimodal metallicity spread can exhibit color bimodality. The mo...
